Taking Ageism Off The Table

Dear God/ess, Over this weekend, with the completion of 40 hours of work, I am contemplating three things: 1) Health care provider cynicism 2) my 60th birthday week 3) and the continuing miraculous recovery of Ulysses The Dog.

1) Health care providers often confer with one another in cynical ways. We tell stories about the battleground of patient care in an attempt to make fun of ourselves and also of the human condition.

Service is at the heart of patient care. If we think that people are behaving in ways that are the opposite of how we think WE would act, then it is humbling to think of Mother Teresa working on the streets of Calcutta, embodying Divinity in all of her human encounters.

Is that not a model for us as we take care of our patients?

2) And the big 60. That one specifically blows my mind. My birthday presents are many. On my birthday night, I am going to join many of my colleagues at work and dance until the wee hours of the morning. We are all night shifters, and will have no need to sleep.

Since I am 20-30 years older than all of my friends with whom I am celebrating, I plan to dance them "under the table."

That is only fair because the Boomers are about to take ageism "off the table," in the years ahead.

3) And finally, Ulysses. He is a model of healing for all of us. How did it happen that he decided to live? How is it possible that he did not die?

Perhaps a part of Ulysses did pass, and left us with a soul who could not bear to leave us. We've proven to Ulysses that we love him for who he is, and yes, we love Mukunda, but we love him just as much. The undying dedication to his comfort and well being proves this fact: singing to him in snow drifts, urging him to eat; sleeping next to him, doing healing work; doing mechano-magic treatments throughout the day; applying ginger compresses to his tumor; giving MMS  three hours day and night; giving Yunnan Baiyan twice a day to stop the bleeding and keep it stopped; these actions and more are blessed acts of Love.

Soon I will be gathering and drying Stinging Nettle in our pasture to sprinkle over the food we cook for him.

Sitting with the dog in the silence between us and the shperes, I revel in the kindness of his company, for he is in the company of angels.

Om Peace Amen
