What Does Raccoon Medicine Teach?

Dear God/ess, Our dog Ulysses has made remarkable progress in his recovery from the Big "C." He is building himself back up. He is getting stronger, pee-ing with greater strength, swims in the river, and wants to get into a part of the barn where a Raccoon recently is taking residence. I think she has a litter of kits, but we haven't yet seen them.

Raccoon Medicine teaches us to find freedom to go beyond the masks or roles we play in every day life. Perhaps the raccoon is telling us to drop the care giving role regarding Ulysses and allow him to find his own way. He is now strong enough to take care of himself, even though I will give him his herbs and mineral, continuing the role of nurse I've identified with for 27 years.

And now, too, the Blessed Mother Mary takes care of Ulysses. I know she has taken on the responsibility of helping him, because I asked her to. Now I must surrender his good health and his life to her.

Raccoon medicine frees us to release the roles we play and surrender any fear and doubt that gets in the way of experiencing  appreciation for the true beauty of life itself.

And in that process, all gifts are freely given and received.

Om Peace Amen
